Baby Shower Gifts That Are Actually Useful, Not Just Cute

The gift list has been picked clean, you're going on Saturday, and everything left on it is either £4 or £140. Meanwhile half the room will arrive with a newborn sleepsuit and a card. This is a guide to buying the one gift that's still in use in October, sorted by the only thing that actually matters: how well you know them.

The short answer: buy for month three, not week one. Almost everything given at a baby shower is sized for a newborn and used up by the time the baby is ten weeks old. Buy bigger, or buy something that isn't clothes at all.

Why so many baby shower gifts go unused

It isn't that people buy badly. It's that twenty people buy well, independently, on the same day.

Everyone reaches for the same categories, because the same categories are at the front of every shop: newborn-size clothing, muslins, a soft toy, bath things. Individually all sensible. Collectively it produces a spare room with fourteen sleepsuits in the smallest size and nothing that fits after March.

The second problem is timing. A shower usually happens four to eight weeks before the birth, so everything arrives at once, before the baby exists, and gets put in a drawer. Then the drawer is opened, everything is the wrong size, and it goes to a charity shop with the labels on.

So the useful gift isn't a cleverer object. It's the same object, timed differently.

Who you are buying for changes what you buy

If you barely know them

A colleague, a partner's friend, someone you like but wouldn't text. You want something that looks considered, costs a defensible amount, and doesn't presume.

Go neutral and go bigger. A gift set in cream, grey or biscuit works whatever the baby turns out to be, gets lent to a friend afterwards, and doesn't require you to have opinions about their nursery. Sets sized 3–6 months are the ones that survive the cull.

What to avoid here: anything with a name on it, anything that assumes a birth plan, and anything that requires them to have a particular kind of house.

Bella's tip

If it's a work whip-round, put the money into one bigger thing rather than four small ones. Four small gifts from one office is four things to find space for. One good one is a gift.

If it's your sister, or the friend you speak to every day

You have permission to be practical, which is a privilege the colleague doesn't have. Use it.

The genuinely useful thing here is volume of the boring stuff. Muslins in a quantity that seems excessive. Vests. The things that get ruined rather than outgrown. Nobody buys these as a gift because they don't photograph well, which is exactly why they run out first.

You are also the person who can give the thing nobody else will: an offer with a date attached. See the section below.

If this is their second or third baby

They have everything. They do not need a muslin. What they don't have is time, and what nobody thinks to acknowledge is the older child, who is about to have a fairly rough month.

Two things work. Something for the sibling, small and unwrapped-at-the-same-time, which buys the parents twenty minutes of peace on a bad afternoon. Or something consumable for the parents that isn't baby-related at all.

If you do want to give a baby gift, make it the thing that wears out rather than the thing that gets kept. Second-time parents have the keepsakes.

The gift that isn't a thing

This is the best gift on the list and it doesn't come from us.

An offer with a date and a time attached. Not "let me know if you need anything", which puts the work of asking onto the person with the newborn and is therefore not an offer at all. Instead: "I'm bringing dinner on the 14th, I'll leave it on the step, you don't have to see me."

Variations that all work: a food shop delivered in week two. A cleaner for a fortnight. An hour where you hold the baby in another room and they have a shower and a nap. A stack of frozen meals in containers you don't want back.

None of this is purchasable from a shop, including this one, and every parent reading this just nodded.

What to skip

Honest opinions, freely given:

  • Newborn-size clothing. Covered above. Somebody else has bought it. Several somebodies.
  • Anything requiring assembly at 38 weeks. They are not going to build it, and now it's in the hall.
  • Scented anything. Too personal a guess, and a lot of people go off strong smells entirely in the early weeks.
  • Newborn shoes. They don't stay on and they don't do anything. Lovely photograph, though.
  • A gift that needs a thank-you note. If your present creates admin for someone who hasn't slept, reconsider the present.

The five-question check before you buy

  • Is it a size that at least ten other people haven't already bought?
  • Will it still be useful three months after the birth, not three days?
  • Does it work whatever the baby turns out to be, and whatever the birth turns out to be like?
  • Can they get rid of it without feeling guilty?
  • Is there space for it in a flat that already has a pram in the hallway?

Ticks don't save when you close the page.

What we'd send

Ours, obviously, so weigh it accordingly. Every set is hand-packed in the UK and comes with a gift card for your message. Most are sized 3–6 months for the reasons in the first half of this article; where one runs wider, I've said so.

Baby Shower Gift Set in a Grand Keepsake Case

The one for a shower specifically, because it has to be opened in front of a room. The case is rigid rather than card, so it gets kept and filled with something afterwards instead of going in the recycling.

If you'd rather give something the baby will drag around by one ear for four years, the Character Collection comforter gift box pairs a plush comforter with bootees and a wrap. Worth knowing before you buy: a comforter is for cuddles, the pram and the sofa, not for the cot. The Lullaby Trust is clear on this: the safest cot is a clear cot, with no soft toys or comforters in it.

For something plainer and longer-lasting, the Cotton Collection gift box runs from birth to twelve months, which sidesteps the sizing problem entirely. And if you want to browse rather than be told, gender-neutral baby gifts and gifts under £25 are the two most useful places to start.

If the shower is this weekend: order before 3pm and it's dispatched the same day, arriving in two to four working days. There's a priority option if you've genuinely left it late. Returns are free within 14 days, which matters more than people think when you're buying for someone else's taste.

Common questions

How much should you spend on a baby shower gift?

My rule of thumb is somewhere around £20 to £30, and nobody counts. Closer friends and family often go higher, colleagues usually club together. Spend less and choose better rather than the reverse – there is no relationship between what a baby gift costs and how often it gets used.

Do you take a gift to a baby shower if you've already sent one?

No. Take a card. Turning up with a second gift makes everyone who brought one feel awkward, and the host now has more to carry home. If you want to do something extra, do it in week three when the house has gone quiet.

What if there's a gift list and everything good has gone?

Buy off-list, but buy in a category the list doesn't cover – a later clothing size, or something consumable for the parents. Gift lists are built around the first fortnight because that's what people can picture. The months after it are wide open and nobody has claimed them.

Is it still a baby shower gift if it arrives after the birth?

It's a better one. A parcel in week five, when the cards have stopped and the house has emptied out, lands harder than anything opened in a room full of people. If you can bear to hold your nerve, post it late on purpose.

The short version

Buy bigger than feels right, or buy something that isn't an object. If you're stuck on sizing specifically, I've gone into it properly in what size baby clothes to buy as a gift. And if you're visiting after the birth rather than before it, what to bring when you visit a newborn covers the other half of this problem.
